Sexual Health Q & A

What services are available during a well woman exam?

During your well woman exam, Dr. Sannoh performs a full gynecological exam and a comprehensive physical exam. Your medical history is reviewed, blood pressure and weight are checked, and blood tests are ordered as needed, depending on your age and overall health.

These services are commonly included in a well woman exam:

  • Pelvic and breast exam
  • Birth control
  • Pap test to screen for cervical cancer
  • Screening for chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease
  • Testing for sexually-transmitted diseases
  • Vaccinations as needed
  • Menopause treatment

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Loss of estrogen commonly occurs at menopause, but it can also be caused by childbirth, cancer treatment, and surgical removal of your ovaries. When estrogen levels decline, many women develop vaginal atrophy, a condition in which vaginal tissues become dry, thin, and less elastic. As a result, you experience painful intercourse, incontinence, and vaginal symptoms such as inflammation, burning, and itching.

Dr. Sannoh uses a gentle radiofrequency device to treat vaginal atrophy and rejuvenate vaginal tissues. Radiofrequency energy stimulates collagen production, which tightens and strengthens vaginal walls and alleviates symptoms caused by atrophy.

What causes low testosterone?

Men experience a natural decline in testosterone as they get older. Testosterone levels begin to fall around the age of 30, then continue to drop at the rate of about 1% yearly. Low testosterone may also be caused by hypogonadism, which is when your body doesn’t produce enough testosterone due to problems with the testicles or pituitary gland.

Low testosterone causes symptoms such as:

  • Loss of sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength
  • Loss of bone mass
  • Decrease in beard and body hair
  • Development of breast tissue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Depression

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Low testosterone is only one possible cause of erectile dysfunction. Drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, stress, and anxiety can all contribute to problems with sexual function. In many cases, however, erectile dysfunction is caused by an underlying health condition such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Sleep disorders
  • Parkinson’s disease

How are the sexual health concerns of men treated?

Dr. Sannoh treats low testosterone with hormone replacement, while medications that enhance nitric oxide effectively increase blood flow and help you get an erection in response to sexual stimulation. The doctor also tests for underlying health conditions and begins appropriate treatment to manage any problems.
